07 Jan Doggone It! Which Raccoon Hunting Hounds are the Best?
You can’t go raccoon hunting without a dog, of course. Several breeds have proven themselves to be favorites of raccoon hunters through the years. Here’s a look at a few of them.
Redbone Coon Hound – considered by many to be the best raccoon hunting dog, the redbone has a smooth red coat on a slender body. It’s easy-going but has the power and speed to do its job in the field. Weighing between 50 and 70 pounds with a height of 20 to 27 inches, the redbone has thick pads on the bottom of its feet. The dogs are born and bred hunters.
Blue Tick Hound – named for its bluish color and dark spots on its back, the blue tick hound weighs 45 to 85 pounds and stands 21 to 27inches tall. They can be trained to live indoors and are good with children and adults. They do tend to need several walks or jogs every day to burn off energy.
Treeing Walker Coon Hound – a blend of early American and British breeds, the walker is white, brown and black with a lengthy, powerful body. It weighs in at 40 to 65 pounds. The walker has a calm temperament but also requires a great deal of exercise and long walks.
